Appreciation Award Presented at Swap Meet

Rensselaer, IN (March 3, 2012) - Rensselaer's Larry Brooks (center) receiving a Rensselaer Raceway appreciation award from former promoter Ted Knorr of Speedway, IN. Also there for the presentation were five time winner of the annual "Brooks Ford Hoosier Championship race, Morocco's Dick Potts and National Stock car racing magazine writer Bob Markos (right). Visitors at Saturday's Racers Trade Show and Swap Meet, at the Jasper County Fairground, included former officials, announcer Ross Mackey from Michigan, drivers who raced the fairground track over twenty years ago, and many departed driver's family members.

Markos wrote a seven page story about the Rensselaer Raceway in the Oct 2011 issue of Late Model Illustrated national magazine. He brought nearly 100 copies of the magazine which were handed out free during the show to those visiting Cathy and Ted Knorr's "Memory Lane" booth. Knorr, now the promoter of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway May 26th "Indy Motorsports Memorabilia Experience" and vintage race car program said, " it's always a great feeling to return to my roots at this fairground...I started here in the 1950's, cleaning restrooms and the old wooden roofed grandstand for my dad when he promoted the Rensselaer Speedway. A good part of my early years in Rensselaer was spent driving stock cars, plus making thousands of laps watering and grading the dirt oval track preparing for our Sunday evening programs." He added "and now we are involved in programming for the largest attended one day sporting event in the world - The Indianapolis 500 Mile Race...the greatest spectacle in racing".

Rensselaer's Larry Brooks presents the 1977 "Brooks Ford 100" Hoosier Dirt Track Championship trophy to Dick Potts of Morocco. The 80 year old Brooks was a long time Rensselaer auto dealer and sponsored the season ending stock car championship for 13 years ('73 to '85) at the Jasper County fairgrounds - (Rensselaer Speedway 1953 -1987).
A recent seven page photo/story about this event was in a October 2011 edition of a national stock car racing magazine. (available upon request).
