Muffler Man Eve of Destruction Series Round
III; A Rousing Success at Dixie Motor Speedway Presented by Draper
Auto Group
By Matt Prieur
Birch Run, Michigan (August 8, 2010): -
ServPro of Saginaw
Presented the Muffler Man Eve of Destruction Series Round III on
Sunday, August 8th at the Dixie Motor Speedway Presented by Draper
Auto Group and a Standing Room Only Crowd was on hand to witness
the
Carnage and Hilarity that is an EOD.
The Birch Run, Michigan speed plant is the HOME of the Often Copied,
Often Imitated, but Never EVER Duplicated hard-core Nights of
Destruction seen all over the country. The first event of this
type
occurred in 1996 at Dixie and since then has grown into one of
the
most popular attractions of any racing season!
The first event of the night was the Spectator Drags, an old school
favorite of an EOD as fans in the grandstands get their chance
to
drive their passenger vehicles around the 1/3 (0.333) mile semi-banked
paved oval in a one lap match against a fellow fan drag style.
The
winner moves on, the loser heads back to the parking lot. When
two
fans are left, it's then best two out of three with the first driver
to win two races declared the winner. Mitch Hall driving a beautiful
Ford Mustang would take the win over a Toyota Celica driven by
Birch
Run / Bridgeport Herald Bomber driver Gary Limron Jr.
Then the Carnage and Destruction truly began with the Chain-Gang
Team
Event, which us always a crowd pleaser with some of the most unique
and off the wall action you'll see. The object of a Chain-Gang
Team
Event is the front car, or truck, or van in some cases, pulls their
teammate, who has no power, around the oval, but do control the
brakes. First Team to complete the mandated distance wins!
The winner of the first Chain-Gang feature would be Cam King and
Corey
King in what was an eventful race to say the least, just barely
inching out the runner-up team. In the second Chain-Gang feature
veteran racers Jim Gokee and Eric Spencer would take the win in
dominating fashion as attrition played a huge role in that event.
Next up were the Flagpole Races, introduced in 2009 after it was
first
attempted at Dixie's sister track to the Southwest, the Owosso
Speedway, this race is always exciting as a huge Tractor Tire is
placed at the center of the Citizens Bank of Frankenmuth start
/
finish line as well as strategically around the 1/3 mile oval.
The object of this race is to run a regular lap around the oval
while
negotiating around the tractor tires and then the competitors must
navigate around a tractor tire located at the center of the start
/
finish line to complete that lap. First one to complete the required
number of laps wins!
Richard Cole would win the first Flag Pole feature by mere inches
in
one of the closest finishes of the 2010 racing season, his first
ever
Muffler Man Eve of Destruction feature win. Ron Haynes would win
a
second, just as thrilling, Flag Pole feature that was filled with
near
constant beating and banging around both of the tractor tires.
Then it was time for the Crash Cars Team Event! The scenario for
this
event is just the opposite of the Chain-Gang Race, which features
disabled cars being propelled or pushed around the track by teammates
shoving them around the oval. A truly hysterical event to watch
and
the first team to take the checkered flag wins.
Donny Matteson Jr. and James Rifki have won at least one event
every
Muffler Man Eve of Destruction held during the 2010 season, and
they
kept that streak alive by winning the first Crash Car feature in
dominating fashion. Jeff Severn and Donald Dennie would luck into
their Crash Car feature win, after the top two teams made contact
in
turn two, separating the teams and allowing Severn and Dennie to
take
the lead and eventually the win.
The last race on the oval track is the fast growing and popular
50-lap
Enduro for the EOD participants. All of the EOD teams get the chance
to shine in a regular race just like the cars the stars of the
Weekly
Local Racing Series do every Friday night and race a straight up
50-lap Feature under Enduro rules. Everything from Cars to Trucks
and
even Vans are allowed and encouraged to participate in this event.
Matt Singer, a regular in the RacingPartSales.com Street Stocks
division, would take the win the in Enduro, which ended up being
a
race of survival. Singer was the last remaining vehicle on the
lead
lap. He would go on to take his first career feature win.
With the oval track Destruction completed, it was time for the
two
co-headliners of the EOD on the adjoining Figure 8s track and first
up
was the highlight of all destruction nights at any race track in
North
America, the School Bus Figure 8 Races. Full-size School Busses
race
around the inner Figure 8s track located within the adjoining 1/3
(0.333) mile semi-banked paved oval.
These mammoth machines can really get going around the longer
than
normal Figure 8s course and the excitement is non-stop! First Bus
to
take the checkered flag is the winner.
Doug Krebiehl would go on to win his second consecutive School-Bus
Figure 8. After a hard hit in the intersection took out then-second
place Adam Baker and left another bus lying on its side.
The traditional night ender to an EOD closed out Muffler Man Eve
of
Destruction Series Round III Presented by ServPro of Saginaw as
it was
time for the Figure 8 Trailer Race! Usually saved as the last event
of
the evening due to the sheer debris that results' from these races.
The object of the Trailer Race is to keep your trailer attached
at all
costs while negotiating around the inner Figure 8s coarse. Cars
(and
Trucks, and even a Van or two) have a trailer attached and must
have
"
something" on the trailer.
The event is usually scheduled for 12 laps, however, the race
could
end when it either reached its scheduled distance or only one car
remained with its trailer attached. Amongst several creatively
decorated trailers, including a stuffed monkey and several jet
skis, a
field of 20 vehicles took the green flag. With several trailers
disabled quickly, Cam King would go on to win the feature, his
second
of the night and end the streak of James Rifki, and be the lone
multiple feature winner of the night.
There are two more Destruction nights remaining on the 2010 schedule
and they are on Friday, September 10th and One More Night has just
been added to the 2010 Schedule for Sunday, October 3rd as that
event
has been dubbed the "Redneck Olympics"
Checkered Flag Promotion Inc., is always looking at possibly adding
another exciting event or two to the already action packed Muffler
Man
Eve of Destruction Series. If there's an event you've seen somewhere
else or perhaps on SPEED TV's "On The Edge" program that
you think
will be something to watch, get in touch with the track staff by
utilizing the tracks contact information.
Up next on the 2010 calendar THIS Friday, August 13th, all Six
